2009 Summer YI Program

C@P Youth interns will be working on projects that focus around the theme “C@P in a Broadband Age”.

As Broadband becomes more available to residents within Nova Scotia, and across the world, the need for C@P Sites and the activities within C@P Sites are changing. Students will be observing these changes and identifying how C@P is adapting to keep up with the changes and how it is responding to the changing needs of their communities.

Broadband has made many internet applications accessible to users. Podcasting and Blogging are two examples that Youth Interns will be looking at this summer. ICCNS has purchased some podcasting equipment that will be made available to youth interns to experiment with and to demonstrate to community members.

This summer NSCAP has partnered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We have received approximately 1200 pedometers and instruction kits from Heart and Stroke NS, these kits are being distributing throughout the Province and a Province-wide initiative engaging all ages is underway with the goal of a healthier Province.

Inverness County will be provided with pedometers at C@P sites. Residents can visit their C@P site to sign out a pedometer for up to three weeks. This initiative fits well with our focus on Podcasting this summer – community members can stop by the C@P site to sign out and test out a pedometer and can learn how to down load podcasts onto their MP3s for their walks.

C@P Sites will be participating in a competition this summer where you will create a group on the Heart and Stroke Walkabout website, creating a walking club. At the end of the summer the numbers will be tallied up, and the person who took the most steps will win are prize, then the C@P Site with the most steps will win a prize, and then the region with the most steps will win a prize. The best part… the intern who logs the most steps will win a prize, this means the more people you get to join your walking group the better.
