European settlers arrived in the region in the 1820s, mainly Scottish Highlanders and Irish. Farming and fishing were the main occupations, and remain so today. Colorful fishing boats and folk art pieces are permanent fixtures.

The completion of the Cabot Trail in 1932 and opening of the National Park in 1936 increased accessibility to the North Highlands communities, and infrastructure improvements in the following decades brought travelers to the region. The Cabot Trial is now considered a world-class tourist destination and featured in travel publications.

The National Park contains many natural wonders, including ancient geological formations, a unique mix of southern and northern plants, and a variety of animals in the forests, rivers, and ocean waters.

Pleasant Bay offers whale watching boat tours as well as providing interpretation in the Whale Centre. This modern facility includes multimedia displays and a life-size model of a pilot whale.

Gampo Abbey is a Shambhala Buddhist monastery overlooking Pleasant Bay. Since its inception in 1984, the abbey has continued to support and train both life-long and temporary monastics, as well serving NS’s Buddhist community.
