The Whycocomagh C@P Site found inside the Whycocomagh Education Centre, the Primary to Grade 8 school for the area.
A centrally located community whether accessed by land or water, Whycocomagh was a key trading area in the 1800s. Immigrants from the Scottish Highlands who had arrived in the early part of the century engaged in farming and logging, and steamer ships took their goods across the Bras D’Or Lakes to Sydney.
Whycocomagh is home to the Waycobah First Nation, a Mi’kmaq community. Both names mean “Head of the Waters”. A Mi’kmaq centre for over 10 000 years, Waycocomagh included all of Whycocomagh up to the 1940s, but is now a partial section of the village.
Waycobah’s first chief was elected in 1958. Later chiefs established businesses and community centres, such as the band office, fitness centre, and gas stations. These remain vital today.
Industries in the area still include dairy farming and forestry, as well as nearby gypsum and marble quarries.
Whycocomagh’s natural surroundings can be experienced in its provincial park. Set on a hillside overlooking the Skye River Valley and the Bras d’Or Lake, the park offers picnicking, hiking, and swimming, and eagles can be spotted in the sky and treetops.
The highlight of a year in Whycocomagh is the Summer Festival, which includes dinners, music and theatre, sports, and church services.
The Whycocomagh C@P site provides computer access for both visitors and residents throughout the year.
